Today

It's been over two months since that horrid day when our little family was hit head-on by a drunk driver on our way to the Oregon Coast. We are slowly healing from the accident, both physically and mentally, but everyday we are reminded that it's going to be a long process. Even though we are accutely aware that our life will never be exactly the same as it was before (something like this does change you), we are trying to put our life back together and feel as "normal" as possible. We have enjoyed visits from several family members and friends, we've enjoyed several beautiful weekends in Portland, and are often able to have a good sense of humor in the midst of incredibly frustrating situations.

Patience has been of utmost importance because nothing happens quickly. The guy who hit us just went to court yesterday (YES, two months later) and is currently in rehab. He supposedly feels very bad for what he did and has accepted all charges against him, including felony assault. In May, he will go back to court for sentencing and will likely get his license suspended for up to 5 years, probation for 5 years and over 200 hours of community service. It's hard to know what punishment would make up for what he did or make you feel better. Really, there is no punishment that would.

We're still waiting to decide how we're going to handle the insurance side of things and have had several meetings with lawyers. It's much more complicated than you would think and right now we're just hoping to get all of Dave's medical bills covered between the various forms of insurance that come into play.

And then there's the physical side of things. Dave is just beginning the long road of physical therapy, strength building and generally getting his body to feel good again. He's still in a lot of pain, though he rarely mentions it. And I am still in physical therapy for my injuries but I'm on the mend and hoping in a few months I'll be able to give running a try again. Our goal is simple - to be able to physically do the things we've always done and remain active.

So...that's the update on that. We're in good spirits and enjoy every moment that we get as a little family. Everyday, we are thankful for the community around us and all of the energy and love that has surrounded us since the accident. We look forward to the day that our bodies have healed more fully and our bills have been settled so we can truly start moving forward from this. For now, we are trying to be patient, laugh as much as possible and enjoy the little things. Cora provides the best healing there is!

You three are the sweetest cutest family. I think your attitudes through this whole thing have been remarkable! xoxo The Browns.

We recently had family photos taken in the Columbia Gorge by a wonderful couple who travel around the world with their two kids taking pictures. I just love how they turned out!

Manzanita and more...

Since my last post, a lot has happened in our household.  We took our first camping trip of the year to Silver Falls State Park and survived!  Cora even got to try smores for the first time.   Edie turned 1 on June 4th and just a few weeks before took her first ambulance rider to the ER due to an infection - ugh!  She's fine now...thankfully. We figure it's our first of many trips to the ER with two very busy little girls.  (On a side note, Cora thought riding in the ambulance was really fun!) I came down with a ridiculous case of Poison Oak that was awful for about three weeks and continues to haunt me.  It seems I'm quite allergic!  Thankfully, no one else got it.  Dave drove himself to the ER in the middle of the night for an emergency appendicectomy that ended up being (and still is) more complicated than normal because of the scar tissue left in his stomach from the car accident.  That was a few weeks ago and his...
